Following Jesus, Serving the Community, Resourcing the Church, Touching Nations

Saturday

I wonder if the enforced rest of the Passover was more frustrating to the women than the men? The women had prepared spices and oils to pour over Jesus body, but because they were devout Jews, they had to stay at home and not do any work. Work included walking more than a certain distance, preparing food, in fact anything that was not really necessary. The purpose was to allow the people to enjoy the Passover festival. It is not possible to really enjoy a day off or a holiday when we have other things distracting us. That is why we all work twice as hard before going away. For many Christians Sunday is not a day of rest because they are involved in the children’s work, teaching, leading setting up etc etc. However, it is important to have time off in the week when we can relax.

Selah:

The English word holiday is a corruption of Holy Day because in the past the only days off for the average person were Christian feasts like Easter or Christmas. Make your holidays Holy Days.

Sunday (Matthew 28v1)

The lord is risen! He is risen indeed!

Do you get the impression that Mary Magdalene was watching all night for the first vague glimmer of evidence that dawn had arrived? Like a runner in the starting blocks, she was off, probably gathering the other women as she went.

I like the bit in Lion King where Rafiki scents on the wind that Simba is alive, he dances round and round saying ‘he’s alive, he’s alive’!

Miracle Maker captures the mix of joy and confusion very well, especially the bit where Jesus appears behind Thomas. The disciples on the road to Emmaus recognised Jesus as He blessed the bread. There are special times, like Easter, or when we share bread and wine, when Jesus seems to be more real, we need to remember these (write them in our prayer journal). Whether today is one of those special times or not, from the moment Jesus came out of that tomb, the universe changed forever, the way to God is open to everyone, sin is dealt with once and for all, and all because:

He’s alive, He’s alive, He’s alive, He’s alive, He’s alive!
