Following Jesus, Serving the Community, Resourcing the Church, Touching Nations

Thursday (Luke 23)

Jesus is now taken to Pilate who tries to pass the buck by sending Him to Herod. Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate, who gives the people a choice. He will release Jesus, who as far as he can see has done absolutely nothing criminal, or Barabbas, who has committed murder and should die anyway. The crowd choose Barabbas. This is the same crowd who had cheered for Jesus on Sunday. Pilate washes his hands in public, showing that he wants nothing to do with Jesus death and hands him over to the religious leaders. Roman soldiers would have to carry out the actual crucifixion. So far, Jesus, having been arrested in Gethsemane, taken to the house of Caiaphas, to the fortress of Antonia, to Herods palace, back to Antonia and from there to Golgotha to die. Two criminals are crucified at the same time as Jesus and to one of them Jesus offers a place with Him in paradise. Even in such extreme circumstances, Jesus is concerned for the well-being of another. Jesus died shortly after this and the curtain in the temple was ripped from top to bottom. Jesus followers placed His body in a tomb belonging to a man called Joseph of Arimathea. Watch Miracle Maker from Peter’s denial to the sealing of the tomb.

Selah:

Even before He dies on the cross, Jesus has been subject to an exhausting night. We can never really understand all that Jesus suffered in order to deal with our sin, but we can be grateful and rejoice that He did, especially that He thought we were worth all it cost Him. Yo!!!

Friday

The Bible only records that the disciples observed the Passover, or rested, like on a Sabbath.
What did they do, what did they talk about? They had all been convinced that Jesus was special, some, like Peter had even declared He was God, but why had He died, more to the point, can God die???? One thing we can be sure of, they talked about Jesus, His teachings, His miracles, trying to understand what had happened.
All Christians will have these bleak moments, when something happens that we are totally unprepared for. A young person with a lifetime of potential dies suddenly. Our employer goes into liquidation and something we thought we could count on till retirement has disappeared in an instant. At these times it is good to remember what God has done for us at other times. Keep a notebook of answered prayer. Get together with Christian friends and remember what God has done, and especially talk of Jesus.

Selah:

If you have never kept a record of prayers prayed and answered consider starting one today.
