Wednesday (Matthew 26v17 – 75)
If you can source a map of Jerusalem showing Jesus footsteps in His last days this would be helpful, because in the space of a few hours, Jesus is taken to several places within Jerusalem, being beaten all along the way. If you have a copy of Miracle Maker, watch it from the point where the disciples are gathering for the Passover to where Peter denies Jesus.
There is now an element of secrecy entering into the story. Jesus tells the disciples (Mark records that it is only two of them) to follow a man carrying a water pot. How would they know they were following the right person? Men did not usually carry water, it was women’s work. Jesus knew that He was going to be betrayed and did not want to be disturbed before He had celebrated the true Passover with the disciples. In this room Jesus shares the Passover bread and wine, but gives it a totally new meaning, one that all people of all nations for all of history would be able to understand and share. Jerusalem was under Roman rule and wherever the Romans went, so did crucifixion. Jesus would have seen this regularly. The victim was always placed somewhere public in order to deter others. Jesus knew exactly what was in store, little wonder that in Gethsemane He asked His Father if there was any other way.
Having been arrested in Gethsemane, Jesus is taken to the house of Caiaphas the high priest. Peter has followed and here he denies that he knew Jesus when put under pressure.
Selah:
It is easy to be a Christian on a Sunday and not so easy on a Monday. We may not deny outright that we know Jesus, but maybe we stay quiet for an easy life. Well at least this Easter the BBC has given us an excuse to talk about Jesus!!!
