Following Jesus, Serving the Community, Resourcing the Church, Touching Nations

Caroline Kimber has put together a Bible Study series for Holy Week. It starts today, why not take the oppotunity this week to reflect on the week leading upto the first Easter.

JESUS LAST WEEK

Last words are important, a person who is going to leave this world will not waste breath or time on trivia. And Jesus was no exception. In His last week He positively ‘crammed’ the disciples with teaching and examples.
Use this material in any way you like but to get the most out of it, you will need a copy of ‘The Miracle Maker’ and access to some images of the Temple (at the time of Jesus) and maps of Jerusalem, if you have the ‘Lion Handbook to the Bible’ or similar, a Thompson Chain reference Bible, a Bible atlas, now is the time to dust them off and use them. This means you will be doing some work, not just reading the verse for the day!!!! Each day will have a ‘Selah’ (think about this) section. No written prayers have been suggested so please pray as the material inspires you to.
The gospels do not agree in every way on the timing of the events of the week, but they do agree that they all really happened, it’s true and we can believe it, Yo!!

Palm Sunday (Matthew 21v1 – 16)

Watch the part in Miracle Maker where Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey and then turns out the market traders, why is He shocked? (It has something to do with what He remembers of His childhood)

If you have a picture of Jerusalem, you need to identify the golden gate. This led from the Mount of Olives, straight into the outer court of the Temple. This is the most likely route that Jesus took. It certainly makes sense of what happens next. Jesus comes into the outer court which was the special place for people who were not Jews to come and pray. It had been taken over by the equivalent of a boot fair/auction/jumble sale with people shouting out their best prices for a sheep or goat. Also, the people who had come a long way with an animal to sacrifice, were told by the priests that the animal was not good enough and they had to buy a more expensive one, or God would not accept it. Everyone was ripping everyone off with the religious people making the most money. You can understand why Jesus was angry.

Selah:

When Jesus was born, who were His first worshippers?

In verses 15-16 of Matthew 21, some people get a special mention from Jesus, what were they doing?

In Mark 11v11 it says that when Jesus went into the temple He looked round at everything. What do you think He looked at and why?

Monday (Matthew 21v17 – 22, Mark 11v12 – 14, 20 – 24)

Jesus had spent the evening at Bethany, probably with Lazarus, Mary and Martha. These were people He could relax with, and the following morning He went back to Jerusalem, so far so good. There is a lot of weird stuff in the Bible! Why did Jesus curse a poor innocent little fig tree? This is a kind of parable (an earthly story with a heavenly meaning). This tree had lots of leaves but no fruit. It just looked good. Likewise, Jesus came to the Jewish people looking for those who would believe that He was the one promised by God, the Messiah. They looked religious but there was no fruit in their lives, remember yesterday. Fruit comes in all sorts of shapes and flavours, if you were a fruit what sort might you be and what effect might you have as that fruit?

Selah:

Look up Bethany on a map of Israel, how far was it to walk? Jesus thought it was worth the walk to be with those people.

When I was young, there was an advert on the TV for a certain beverage, the punchline was ‘It looks good, it tastes good and by golly it does you good. Christians should be like this, our looks should match our flavour and our actions.

Have you been watching the Passion on BBC1? Look out for opportunities to talk the walk and walk the talk.
